The flue gas from a municipal solid waste incinerator (MSWI) was irradiated with electron beams to destroy polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs). A flue gas of 1,000 m/h N for the irradiation was obtained at 200C from a main gas stream of the MSWI. The decomposition efficiencies of PCDD/Fs were increased with absorbed dose and reached 90% at a dose of 14 kGy. The reaction mechanisim for PCDD/Fs was also considered.

Utilization of bio-resources by radiation has been investigated for recycling the natural resources and reducing the environmental pollution. Polysaccharides such as chitosan and sodium alginate were easily degraded by irradiation and induced various kinds of biological activities, i.g. anti-microbial activity, promotion of plant growth, suppression of heavy metal stress, phytoalexins induction. Radiation degraded chitosan was effective to enhance the growth of plants in tissue culture. It was demonstrated that the liquid sample irradiation system using low energy EB was effective for the preparation of degraded polysaccharides. Methylcellulose (MC) can be crosslinked under certain radiation condition as same as carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) and produced the biodegradable hydrogel for medical and agricultural use. Treatment of soybean seeds by low energy EB enhanced the growth and the number of rhizobia on the root.

Dosimetry study for 300 keV electron beams was performed using Gafchromic film dosimeters having 8-m thick radiation-sensitive layer for dose rate measurement, a prototype total-absorption aluminum calorimeter for energy fluence measurement and semi-empirical calculation using EDMULT code for depth-dose distribution estimation. The three preliminary results are compared concerning to dose rate distribution and energy fluence as a function of depth in air. Influences in dosimetry for 300 keV electrons are discussed based on these results.

Proton exchange membranes were prepared by the radiation-induced grafting of styrene into crosslinked polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) films and subsequent sulfonation. The degree of grafting was controlled in the range of 7-75% by the crosslinking density of the PTFE matrix as well as the grafting conditions. The films at the grafting yield of 30% were found to give the ion exchange membranes with a homogeneous distribution of sulfonic acid groups. The resulting membranes showed a large ion exchange capacity reaching 2.9 meq g, which exceeded the performance of commercially-available perfluorosulfonic acid films such as Nafion. This will encourage the use of our ion exchange membranes in polymer electrolyte fuel cells.
